Our narrative of the US has brought us to the divisive figure of President Andrew Jackson, who swept to power on a promise of a very different sort of America. That included a view of the economy which contrasted with his political rivals, and would create some big rifts in American society.
The first big question was about whether the Charter of the National Bank should be renewed, which may not sound like the sort of issue to set pulses racing... but proved hugely controversial. So too did the issue of tariffs, so much so, in fact, that it led to a showdown between South Carolina and the Federal government which brought them to the verge of military confrontation.
Who knew that banks and bills could some with so much bombast... join Simon to find out just why!
